MA Visual Arts Programme

With a creatively diverse environment, an invigorating research community and one of the world’s most culturally dynamic cities – taking an MA at Camberwell is an experience rich in opportunity.

Full and Part-time modes

Our postgraduate pathways enjoy international reputations within their respective fields, and attract students from all over the world, who come to be challenged and stimulated, and to experience an academic environment that remains close-knit and welcoming.

Camberwell’s London location puts a huge range of resources within access of our MA students. Libraries, museums and collections hold a wealth of prime research material that students are encouraged to take full advantage of, while the extraordinary range of exhibitions and events provides a rich context for the study of contemporary art and design.

The college offers a postgraduate (MA) course in Visual Arts with pathways in Book Arts, Conservation, Designer-Maker, Digital Arts (face-to-face and online), Drawing, Graphic Design, Illustration, Printmaking and Transnational Arts. There is also a Postgraduate Diploma course in Conservation. The Fine Art pathway will be available this coming 2009-2010 year, and Drawing will be relocated to Wimbledon this September 2009 in preparation for the CCW Graduate school planning.  The equal weight that our pathways give to traditional and innovative practice has earned widespread praise; a characteristic that is strengthened through links with leading practitioners and researchers in every field.

Camberwell’s postgraduate community

The range of pathways for study at Camberwell focuses on specialist subjects delivered by leading academics and practitioners within these fields. The pathways share a common postgraduate framework, which allows for and encourages the interaction between them. This cross-pathway exchange helps students to define their practice and research aims within a strong and supportive postgraduate community.  Postgraduate is increasingly seen as a route to further study and students are made aware of the research possibilities open to them both within the college and across the university.

In 2003, the quality of postgraduate learning at Camberwell was officially recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency, the higher education standards authority. The spirit of challenge engendered by the college’s postgraduate community and its capacity to incorporate both traditional and new technologies won special praise. The QAA found our teaching to be current, responsive to students’ needs and informed by staff research and professional practice.
